You might get a joke email about, your new neighbors might warn you about it, or you might just get lost driving, but the fact is that Austin's streets have a naming convention all their own. Here's a guide to Austin's street name a.k.a.'s - happy driving!

As far as Austin's downtown streets, well, those actually make some sense. With the exception of Congress Avenue, the downtown streets that run north and south parallel the order that Texas rivers flow throughout the state. So, from east to west the streets (and therefore the rivers) are: Sabine, Red River, Neches, Trinity, San Jacinto, Brazos, Colorado, Lavaca, Guadalupe, San Antonio, Nueces and Rio Grande.
And the downtown streets that run east to west (with the exception of First Street) carry the names of Texas trees. In numerical order (south or north), here are the streets (and coinciding tree):
Second Street = Live Oak
Fifth Street = Pine
Ninth Street = Ash
Third Street = Cypress
Sixth Street = Pecan
Tenth Street = Mulberry
Fourth Street = Cedar
Seventh Street = Bois de Arc
Eleventh Street = Mesquite
Eighth Street = Hickory
