There are several golf course communities throughout the Austin area. One of the oldest golf clubs is Onion Creek in South Austin. Created by Austin native Jimmie Connolly and Legendary Golfer Jimmy Demaret, the club opened in 1974 and is still a popular and esteemed club to this day. The community surrounding the club is just as highly regarded, with beautiful homes on large lots in a tree-filled community.
Homes in Onion Creek
Onion Creek offers large, traditional-style homes at competitive prices. The exteriors often feature masonry and stonework. Inside, the homes are spacious and typically feature stylish updates. Homeowners take advantage of the beautiful South Austin landscape and golf course setting by creating outdoor spaces with entertaining or cooking areas and pristine landscaping. House hunters will find homes with 2 or more bedrooms and as many bathrooms. There are a variety of housing types in the neighborhood, so homes vary in size.
Onion Creek Metropolitan Park
In addition to the many amenities offered by the Onion Creek Country Club, there is a 555-acre regional park nearby the community. The park is a large wooded area that features picnic sites and ponds. Also nearby is the Onion Creek Greenbelt which travels approximately 79 miles.
Entertainment and dining are offered at the nearby Southpark Meadows development, which features large retailers like Target, Kohl’s, Best Buy, JC Penney and Wal-Mart. There are dining options that include the local favorite, Serrano’s Tex-Mex Grill and the Longhorn Steakhouse. Inside Southpark Meadows, you can also find a movie theater, gyms, health and wellness services and postal services among others.
The Golf Club
Onion Creek Club was designed with the natural landscape in mind. Demaret was highly applauded for his course and club, but gave credit to the local landscape by saying that “Nature put it here, all I did was manicure it”. Demaret’s vision was to the landscape dictate the course layout. The result is a beautiful course that offers a challenge to seasoned golfers and recreation for beginners, too.
