The Headwaters School PACT

At Headwaters we invite our students guides staff parents and trustees to be Peacemakers Advocates Creators and Thinkers. At our Early Childhood campus (18 months to Pre-K) and Elementary campus (K-5th Grade) this PACT blends seamlessly with the Montessori curriculum which strives to help children see who they are both as individuals and also in the context of a global community.

Why We Call Our Teachers Guides

Our lower school Montessori program is designed with the knowledge that children entering these stages of development are increasingly capable people eager for new and broader learning opportunities and social explorations. We believe that every child deserves to have an exceptionally planned and well-prepared learning environment. The role of the educators is to prepare the learning environment and to act as personal guides to each and every student: to recognize readiness to follow personal interests and to illuminate the way on the child’s journey through active discovery. The Montessori Guide is first an observer then a facilitator guiding the child toward ever-expanding concepts of interest and ability.

How We Track Learning in Our Elementary Montessori Program

On our Elementary campus each class has two guides as well as specialists who come to teach regular classes in music gardening art P.E. and Spanish. During the course of a day children participate in individual small and whole-group lessons as well as work both in partnerships and independently. Children are allowed to advance at their own pace. A child may quickly master one concept and need to spend a longer amount of time on another. This way children experience learning as moving from one level of mastery to another thus developing a positive and healthy view of themselves as learners. They also come to appreciate that all people have a unique set of strengths and challenges.

We track the children’s progression through the curriculum with a combination of student record-keeping and portfolio maintenance as well as teacher observation evaluation and record-keeping. This ensures that all academic goals are met.

We have recess on our playground every day to give the children an opportunity to interact and cultivate relationships across the age levels. This also allows time for them to recharge in their own unique ways.

From Montessori to International Baccalaureate

The Montessori curriculum in our Early Childhood and Elementary programs is the foundation that leads to our International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme in our High School and sets us apart from every other school in Austin. Both Montessori and IB share a dedication to growing compassionate global citizens who are self-directed lifelong learners. The mission of the International Baccalaureate is “to develop inquiring knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”
