Twice a year, the historic Sixth Street district transforms into a bustling open-air market filled with live music, art vendors, food trucks, and festivalgoers from all over Texas. This is the Pecan Street Festival Austin —an iconic event that has helped define the cultural and creative identity of Austin for over four decades. The festival not only celebrates local artistry but also fosters community spirit, making it a must-visit for both locals and tourists. Visitors can immerse themselves in a vibrant atmosphere, enjoy diverse culinary offerings, and experience the rich cultural tapestry of Austin.

How Did the Pecan Street Festival Begin?

The Pecan Street Festival was first held in 1978 as part of an effort to revitalize the Sixth Street area, which had seen better days. At the time, Sixth Street was still officially named Pecan Street, a throwback to the original naming system of downtown Austin’s numbered grid where streets were named after trees. This festival was envisioned not just as a revival of the street but as a celebration of Austin’s artistic legacy. Initially a small gathering, it quickly grew in popularity, illustrating the community’s desire to celebrate local talent and heritage.

The idea was simple: celebrate the street’s artistic spirit while breathing life back into the historic district. What started as a small, local art fair has since become one of the largest and longest-running arts and crafts festivals in the Southwest. Over the years, the festival has evolved, incorporating diverse artistic expressions and a wide array of culinary delights, showcasing the evolution of Austin’s culture. It has also paved the way for many local artists, giving them a platform to gain exposure and connect with potential patrons.

What Makes the Pecan Street Festival Unique

  • Free and Family-Friendly:   With no admission fee, the festival draws tens of thousands of attendees each season.
  • Local Artists and Craftspeople:  From handmade jewelry and ceramics to original paintings and textiles, over 300 vendors showcase one-of-a-kind pieces.
  • Live Music:   Multiple stages feature everything from indie rock and jazz to country and funk.
  • Food Trucks & Drinks:   Expect local eats, artisan lemonade, and a few quirky treats—like deep-fried everything.
  • Kids Activities:  Face painting, interactive booths, and bounce houses make it great for families.

When and Where Is the Pecan Street Festival

The Pecan Street Festival is held each May and September on East Sixth Street, between Brazos Street and I-35. Festival hours usually run from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Saturday and 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Sunday. It’s outdoors, rain or shine.  In May 2025, the 50th Annual Pecan Street Festival moved to the Hill Country Galleria in Bee Cave, due to restructuring of Historic Sixth Street.  It is unknown where the Fall 2025 Pecan Street Festival will be held, but organizers expect to bring it back to Austin.

Why Austinites Keep Coming Back

The festival is more than an arts fair—it’s a snapshot of what makes Austin, Austin. It embraces the city’s creative energy, welcomes weirdness, and supports local businesses in the heart of downtown. It’s also a great way for newcomers to get a taste of Austin’s culture without spending a dime.
